Handmade Pens

The earliest writing instrument known to man was a modified stone tool used by early man to scratch pictures onto the walls of their cave habitats. The Greeks developed the first tool resembling our modern day implement, known as a stylus. These tools were crafted from bone, ivory or metal and were used to scratch characters into wax-coated tablets.

With the development of rudimentary inks and papers, the Romans crafted the first tubular pen from the hollow stems of marsh grasses. Eventually, a goose feather became the tubular material of choice, and thus the quill pen dominated the writing arena for over one thousand years.

Today, a number of ink delivery methods are widely used: from the classic fountain pen to the highly-utilized ballpoint to the advanced ink-science of our high-end rollerball pens. Whether you are shopping for an everyday writing instrument or for a unique addition to your collection, we hope you will find that one of our pieces catches your eye.
